What is mathematics and statistics about?

Kei hopu tōu ringa ki te aka tāepa, engari kia mau ki te aka matua.

Mathematics is the exploration and use of patterns and relationships in quantities, space, and time. Statistics is the exploration and use of patterns and relationships in data. These two disciplines are related but different ways of thinking and of solving problems. Both equip students with effective means for investigating, interpreting, explaining, and making sense of the world in which they live.

Mathematicians and statisticians use symbols, graphs, and diagrams to help them find and communicate patterns and relationships, and they create models to represent both real-life and hypothetical situations. These situations are drawn from a wide range of social, cultural, scientific, technological, health, environmental, and economic contexts

The children will work at their appropriate level according to their individual needs. The focus for implementation is on:

• Improving the performance of all students who are underachieving in mathematics/pāngarau.

• Providing ongoing support for teachers in mathematics/pāngarau.

New Learning

Children learning new concepts through appropriate experiences, approaches and activities.

Developing Understanding – Practice

Children need to represent their knowledge in the form of-

• spoken and written words

• concrete apparatus

• pictures, diagrams and graphs

• symbols

• information technology (computer, calculator)

Number will be broken down into the content areas of:

• numeral identification

• number sequence and order

• grouping / place value

• basic facts

• written recording

• Strategy – addition and subtraction

• Strategy – multiplication and division

• Strategy – proportions and ratio

Problem Solving

Open ended problems that reflect relevant life situations that will foster creativity, experimentation,

flexibility and enjoyment in mathematics.

Daily Practice

Class activities throughout the school reinforcing basic facts, problem solving and computation (middle).

Programmes will be based on children’s needs and the Achievement Objectives as in the New Zealand Curriculum/Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.

An integrated approach to learning and focusing on contexts that have meaning for children, will be

followed where possible so that there are links to mathematical experiences of the real world.

School Organisation

• The class programme is the individual teacher’s responsibility with the support of the maths/pāngarau leaders.

Planning of Programmes

The long term plans are organised at syndicate level.

The teachers will follow the Te Kura o Te Teko planning, evaluating and reporting requirements.

Maths/Pāngarau leaders will keep a checklist for planning to ensure all the achievement objectives are covered.

Assessment, Record Keeping and Reporting

• Evaluation provides the essential link between learning and planning for future teaching.

• Assessment provides information about the child’s learning behaviour and what has been learned.

• A variety of assessment procedures will be used – oral, written, using technology and teacher made tests.

• Tracking of children in Number will be carried out each year to see if they meet

• NUMPA/Uiui testing will be carried out with New Entrant children as they arrive. All other new children will be tested on arrival at school.

• Class testing of units and basic facts, and ongoing self evaluation of teaching and planning for each ‘unit’ taught, will show teachers any other areas that need attention.

Teachers to follow Bi-annual mathematics/pāngarau term plan.
